Here's a little secret I learned at Ground Zero and on a dozen hikes with my girls: the plan is never the hard part. Life happening to the plan — that's the hard part. So let's learn the three little words that turn a busted plan into a win: Adapt, Improvise, Overcome.
▶ Play 1-min intro

Why these three words?

You already know Learn It · Live It · Share It. That's how we grow a healthy habit. But the real world doesn't read your plan. The bus is late. The gym is closed. The recipe's missing an ingredient. The storm rolls in early.

Mission-driven people — Marines, paramedics, nurses, scout leaders, and yes, families on a long road trip — all lean on the same little drill when reality breaks the plan. It keeps a small problem from becoming a big one. Think of it as the shock absorber on a car: the road's still bumpy, but you don't feel every pothole, and you stay on the road.

The drill, one step at a time

1

Adapt — read what changed

Pause for one breath. What's actually different now? Name it plainly before you react. You can't solve a problem you haven't looked at.

2

Improvise — make a path with what you've got

You rarely have the perfect tool. Use what's in reach. A walk instead of the closed gym. Frozen veggies instead of fresh. The stairs instead of the elevator. Good-enough-and-safe beats perfect-but-stuck.

3

Overcome — commit and move, safely

Pick the path and actually do it. Then notice it worked — that's the confidence you carry into the next curveball. Overcoming isn't toughing it out; it's finishing the mission in a way that's healthy for you and the people around you.

Who you're protecting at every step

A good adaptation is good for more than just you. Run every choice through Me · We · Ours:

Me
My own health & safety first — I'm no help to anyone hurt.
We
My neighbors & family — does my fix keep them safe too?
Ours
What's practical here — the place, the weather, the rules around me.

Dr. Rob's takeaway
A plan tells you where you're going. Adapt-Improvise-Overcome is how you actually get there when the road surprises you. Now let's put it to work.

👥 Face-to-Face Practice
Try this out loud with a partner, your family, or your group:
  • Take turns telling a real "the plan broke and I adapted" story — the others name which step (Adapt / Improvise / Overcome) was hardest.
  • Role-play: one person describes a curveball, the other walks the three steps out loud in real time.
  • Each person commits to one plan this week and a backup move if it breaks.
