Learning Objectives
Explain the "leave it better than you found it" ethos and its roots in Scouting, parks, and family practice.
Distinguish small, repeatable acts of care from grand gestures, and why the small ones drive real change.
Apply stewardship at three scales — Me, We, and Ours — to a real space or relationship.
Demonstrate how modeled stewardship ripples outward and invites others to copy it.
🎣 Hook 3 min
Ask: "Have you ever walked into a messy room or a trashed park and just felt worse — or walked into a clean one and wanted to keep it that way?" That feeling is the whole lesson. "Today we learn six words that can change a campsite, a classroom, or a friendship: leave it better than you found it."
🧠 Pre-Game: The Ethos (Learn It) 8 min
Walk through the ethos, its origins, and the key reframe: "better" is the small act of care, repeated — not a grand gesture. Introduce the three rings of stewardship: Me (leave yourself better), We (leave your people better), Ours (leave the shared world better).
🎮 Gameplay: Stewardship Tracker (Live It) 18 min
- Round 1 (10 min): Each student picks a real space, checks off leave-it-better acts (tagged Me/We/Ours), and watches the Ripple meter grow.
- Round 2 (8 min): Add a custom act and commit to doing it in a real space today.

💬 Debrief Discussion 11 min
- Surprise: "Which 'small' act do you think would actually make the biggest difference if everyone did it?"
- Mechanism: "Why does a clean space invite care while a messy one invites more mess? What does that tell us about ripples?"
- Application: "Name one space or relationship you'll leave better this week, and exactly how."
