NASA is building a permanent base on the Moon. We're training the generation that will live and work there — and on Mars.
Humanity's First Permanent Home Beyond Earth
Project Ignition is NASA's initiative to establish a crewed, continuously operated outpost near the Moon's south pole. The program combines robotic precursor missions, modular habitat construction, and advanced life support technology to create a sustainable human presence beyond Earth. It represents the most ambitious step yet toward preparing humanity for deep-space exploration, including eventual crewed missions to Mars.

Now – 2029 • Up to 25 missions, 21 landings
2029 – 2032 • Up to 24 landings, 60 tons of cargo
2032 and beyond • 38 tons of cargo per year
The careers needed for the Moon Base are the careers you're training for right now.
Diagnose and treat crew members in low-gravity environments where every medical decision is mission-critical.
Design and operate the autonomous systems that build, maintain, and explore before humans ever arrive.
Create life support tech and medical devices that keep crews healthy millions of miles from the nearest hospital.
Keep the data flowing between the lunar surface and Earth — every signal could save a life.
Provide immediate trauma care when there's no ambulance to call and evacuation isn't an option.
Support crew mental health through isolation, confinement, and the psychological demands of space living.
Every mission begins with a single step. Choose your path and start building the skills the Moon Base needs.
