Use the Media Library

Upload diagrams, procedural photos, and videos through the Module Media Manager. Visuals are key to phlebotomy instruction — students learn venipuncture best when they can see it.

Module 1 — Fundamentals
"Why do you think phlebotomy is one of the most performed medical procedures in the world — and what happens when it's done poorly?"
Teaching tip: Connect to real-world impact. Even a small needle stick error can lead to hemolysis, misdiagnosis, or patient distrust. Start with stakes.
Module 2 — Safety & Infection Control
"If a coworker skipped putting on gloves because the patient looked healthy, what would you say — and why?"
Teaching tip: This question builds ethical muscle. Universal precautions exist because you can't tell by looking. Encourage students to practice professional confrontation.
Module 3 — Venipuncture Technique
"You've tied the tourniquet and can't find a vein. The patient is anxious. Walk us through your next 60 seconds."
Teaching tip: This exercises procedural thinking under pressure. Look for students who mention warming the arm, re-palpating, or asking for help — these are marks of competence.
Module 4 — Order of Draw
"The order of draw exists for a reason. What could happen to a patient's lab results if you drew a lavender tube before the light blue?"
Teaching tip: EDTA contamination from the lavender top can falsely alter coagulation results. This is a great bridge to discussing tube additives and cross-contamination.
Module 5 — Special Collections
"You're assigned a blood draw on a 3-year-old. How does your approach change — physically, emotionally, and procedurally?"
Teaching tip: Pediatric draws require heel sticks or butterfly needles, smaller tubes, and a completely different bedside manner. Great for building empathy and adaptability.
Module 6 — Professionalism & Certification
"What's the difference between a phlebotomist who's certified and one who's just trained? Does the credential really matter?"
Teaching tip: NHA CPT certification opens doors, demonstrates competence to employers, and signals commitment to patients. Connect to career trajectory and professional identity.

Phlebotomy has one of the oldest and most colorful histories in medicine. These facts make great class openers or "fun fact of the day" moments.

~1400 BCE — Ancient Origins
Bloodletting was practiced in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Hippocrates believed illness was caused by an imbalance of the four humors — blood, phlegm, yellow bile, and black bile.
The word "phlebotomy" comes from the Greek phlebos (vein) + tome (cutting).

Medieval Era — The Barber-Surgeons
For centuries, barbers doubled as surgeons and bloodletters. The red-and-white barber pole? It symbolizes blood and bandages from this era.
In 1163, Pope Alexander III banned clergy from performing bloodletting, handing the practice to barbers — who already had the sharp tools.

1628 — William Harvey's Revolution
William Harvey published "De Motu Cordis," proving that blood circulates through the body via arteries and veins — overturning 1,400 years of Galenic theory.
This discovery laid the foundation for modern venipuncture by mapping the vascular system we draw from today.

1901 — Blood Types Discovered
Karl Landsteiner identified the A, B, and O blood groups, making safe blood transfusions possible for the first time. He won the Nobel Prize in 1930.
Before blood typing, transfusions were essentially gambling — sometimes they worked, sometimes the patient died from hemolytic reaction.

1947 — The Vacutainer is Born
Joseph Kleiner invented the evacuated blood collection tube (Vacutainer), replacing the syringe-and-open-tube method. This is the system your students will use every day.
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company) commercialized the Vacutainer and it remains the global standard for blood collection.

1991 — OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard
In response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, OSHA enacted the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard — requiring gloves, sharps containers, and universal precautions for all blood handlers.
This regulation transformed phlebotomy from a "just stick 'em" trade into a safety-first profession with formal protocols.
