OSHA, HIPAA, The Joint Commission, bloodborne pathogen standards, PPE protocols, and exposure control. Your safety shield.
Week 2 — Mastering Your Craft
Patient Prep · Collection · Special Collections · Processing
📋 Module 3: Preparing the Patient
Patient ID, communication, vein assessment, tourniquet technique, site selection, special populations, and pre-collection checklists.
💉 Module 4: Routine Blood Collection
Equipment, order of draw, antiseptic prep, the complete 16-step venipuncture procedure, dermal puncture, specimen labeling, and complication management.
🧬 Module 5: Special Collections
Blood cultures, blood smears, newborn screening (PKU), ABG collection, glucose tolerance testing, and pediatric minimum volumes.
⚗️ Module 6: Specimen Processing & Lab Foundations
Pre-analytical variables, centrifuge ops, aliquoting, specimen rejection, critical value reporting, and CLIA-waived POC testing.
